How to do a Vehicle Inspection Report?

The report must be completed trough the Qualcomm device every day for each operated vehicle. It must list any defect or deficiency discovered by or reported to the driver.

Title 49 Part 396 of the FMCSA requires every driver to perform and complete a Vehicle Inspection Report every day on each vehicle operated. The report must cover at least the following parts and accessories:

  • Service brakes including trailer brake connections;
  • Parking brake;
  • Steering mechanism;
  • Lighting devices and reflectors;
  • Tires;
  • Horn;
  • Windshield wipers;
  • Rear vision mirrors;
  • Coupling devices;
  • Wheels and rims;
  • Emergency equipment.

The report must be completed trough the Qualcomm device every day for each operated vehicle. It must list any defect or deficiency discovered by or reported to the driver, which would affect the safety of the vehicle or result in its mechanical breakdown. The driver must prepare and submit VIR even if no defects have been discovered. All discovered defects must be submitted through the ELD device. If the driver has not found any defects during the pre-trip inspection, he or she shall submit no defects report, later during the day, if a defect appears, the other VIR must be provided. Maintenance will get alerted and will arrange for repair.
